Cologne, 6 November 2018 – After carrying out tests with 4000 visitors at Technopolis, Picanova has automated their 3D full-body scanning solution. Picanova’s 3D.me has revolutionized the scanning process and created the world’s first self-service body scanner: users just need to scan the RFID bracelet they receive when entering Technopolis and the automated voice explains what to do. Technopolis is a science and technology center for the whole family.

“Since our first scanner in March 2017 we’ve steadily improved the technology. This is the 3rd generation of our 3D scanners, able to scan up to 1000 people a day,” explains Michel Brull, Head of 3D at Picanova. “Self-service makes life easier for a lot of people. We’ve kept it as simple as possible and now it’s a very quick and convenient solution for the ever-growing 3D market. Our avatars can be used for social media, sporting apps and gaming, to name just a few examples.”

“Our goal is to get as many people as possible fascinated about new technologies. When we first got to know about Picanova’s 3D.me technology, we were convinced that this would really capture the attention of our visitors! You don’t run into a 3D scan every day, do you?!” states Ester Blockx, Sales & Marketing Director at Technopolis.

The scanning procedure takes just 5 seconds. Shortly afterwards the user receives a mini-me in 3D form that can be used for social commerce or video games.

A video explainer of how the automated scanner works can be found here: https://youtu.be/wCI1l508_jY

Entertainment parks, event organizers and retail outlets will now have a tool for increasing their online presence – as well as making money – by selling figurines. 3D.me handles all operations, customer support and production.

The top-class jury has subsequently selected the best 100 pictures and has awarded three main prizes. First place went to “Lean on me” by Laura Zalenga from Munich. Second and third places went to Michael Jaster with “Rosa Flamingo” and Carsten Schröder with “Firefighter” respectively. The award ceremony with Picanova’s Managing Director, Philipp Mühlbauer, and Managing Director of Foto Koch, Thomas Görner, took place yesterday in Hall 1 in front of the picture gallery of the ‘Top 100 Photography Award’.

“We are overwhelmed by such a large number of participants and are very pleased with the outstanding quality and unique visual language of the entries,” said Philipp Mühlbauer, Managing Director of Picanova.

The first, second and third place winners received prizes worth 10,000, 6,000 and 4,000 Euros respectively, half of which can be redeemed at Foto Koch photo shop in Düsseldorf and half at picanova.de. In addition, the winners will receive their own picture sized at 120x80cm as an Alu-Dibond photo print as well as strategic support in setting up their Photo.Club web shop for selling their own motifs.

The winners were not the only ones who benefited though. Prizes worth 500,000 Euros were awarded to participants.

The three main winners live for photography

Laura Zalenga from Munich studied architecture and has been an independent portrait artist since 2014. She impressed the jury with her winning picture “Lean on me” (taken with a Sony α7R II).  The photo is part of a project where the artist reinterprets existing pictures from her portfolio. “I am very happy about the first place and the attention my photo gets from the exhibition at photokina. This is a great opportunity to make my photography even better known,” says Zalenga.

Second-placed Michael Jaster from Düsseldorf has been closely associated with photography since 1975. His photo “Rosa Flamingo” was taken during a holiday stay on Fuerteventura with a Nikon D800/70-200. “We were in a beautiful park and were surprised by passing flamingos. Sometimes you need a little luck with the motives!”

Carsten Schröder, who finished third with his photo, has been taking pictures since his early childhood and has already received numerous awards for his work. This specific piece “Firefighter” taken with a Fuji X-T2, was produced during a workshop at Saarbrücken Airport. “The photo was taken during the blue hour. It shows a panther of the airport fire brigade “throwing the water cannon at the right moment.”

Cologne, September 26, 2018 – Picanova is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of custom wall, home and lifestyle products and, for the first time this year, will be exhibiting at photokina, the world’s leading trade fair for the photo, video and imaging industry. At its stand B-30 / C-37 in Hall 3.1, the company will be showcasing its latest products and B2B solutions, and in Hall 1, the 100 winning images of the photography contest ‚Top 100 Photography Award‘ are exhibited as Alu Dibond prints. In addition, Picanova has also printed large-format prints for Huawei, RedBull and Honor, Huawei’s premium brand, as part of two collaborations during the trade fair. The photokina takes place from the 26th to the 29th of September at the exhibition center in Cologne.

Picanova’s presents its complete product portfolio and newest software innovations at its company booth in Hall 3.1. One of the product highlights will be the home fashion collection consisting of high quality cushions, blankets and carpets, all ready for individualization with photos and designs.

In addition to the variety of interesting photo products, visitors also have the opportunity to get to know Picanova’s own 3D scanning technology. This attraction is unique at photokina: Visitors can receive a three-dimensional full body scan in just 4 seconds. This 3D scan is then built into a digital model that visitors can view as a 3D avatar on their mobile phone. This model can also be ordered directly as an original miniature figure, which is manufactured using state-of-the-art 3D printing.

In Hall 5.2 at booth F-010 / G-011, RedBull and Huawei have teamed up to build a halfpipe where professional skaters will present their skills and can be photographed by the visitors. A 12×5 m by Picanova printed wallpaper hangs above the halfpipe. For Huawei’s premium brand, Honor, 18 images were printed on 80x60cm forex, which had been taken with Honor mobile phones. With those collaborations Picanova once again demonstrates that it can offers much more than just photo products for end consumers.

Picanova puts a special focus on its position as an established fulfillment-partner in the photo-products sector. The company is no longer exclusively active in the B2C business but is continuously expanding its B2B business. For example, Picanova is the official fulfillment partner for photo-products for large retail chains such as real.- GmbH and REWE Group.

Besides the new products, Picanova will showcase its innovative technology solutions.
